Bassford College Baseball Top 25 Rankings 5.9.16

Florida holds onto the top spot for yet another week as the Gators continue their dominance between the lines. The Gators are 16-7 versus top 50 teams and have 20 wins versus top 100 teams, something only a handful of Division 1 teams can say. Still, Florida is tied with South Carolina for the SEC East lead and will have to claw their way to a division title.

 Top Five

  1. Florida won three and lost one over the past week, the team has one of the highest SOS in division 1 and is 11-3 in their last 14. The team has won two out of three on the road against Tennessee and beat Bethune-Cookman midweek. The Gators face Vanderbilt this coming weekend before finishing their season in Baton Rouge against LSU.
  2. Louisville won two of three games on the road against North Carolina, winning 6-0 and 10-6 against the Heels. The Cardinals are tied for first in the ACC Atlantic division with #8 Florida State. They will face #5 NC State this coming weekend.
  3. Texas A&M leads the SEC West and this past weekend won a huge series with Vanderbilt, two games to one. The Aggies will head to Columbia this weekend to take on #15 South Carolina. Next week, #10 Ole Miss.
  4. Miami already split a pair of games with Georgia Tech this weekend in Atlanta.  They will finish up their series tonight as the rubber match will be played on ESPNU. With a win, the Hurricanes would increase their ACC Coastal division lead to three games over Virginia with only six games remaining.
  5. NC State dropped four spots this past weekend after losing to Clemson on the road in their weekend set. The Wolfpack have now lost three out of their last four and are heading in the wrong direction with playoff baseball approaching. The team still has crucial series left to play in the regular season against #2 Louisville and #13 North Carolina.

New

  • #16 Rice jumps into the Top 25 for the first time this year after going 4-0 on the weekend including a 7-2 win over Lamar and a series sweep of Florida International. The Owls have won six straight overall and are tied with #23 Southern Miss for the Conference USA lead.
  • #21 Arizona joins the Top 25 after an undefeated weekend of baseball against Oregon State, outscoring the Beavers 16-7 over three games. The Wildcats are a half game behind Pac-12 leader Washington in the title race. They will face Arizona State at home this coming weekend.
  • #23 Southern Miss won their fourth game in a row this weekend after sweeping the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky. The Golden Eagles racked up 28 runs in three games and, with the series victory, are still in command at the top of the C-USA standings.
  • #24 Tulane joined the ranks this week after sweeping South Florida on the road and taking the conference lead in the AAC by one half game over East Carolina. The Greenies have won 9 of their last 10 games and play Memphis this coming weekend at home. Tulane also has an 8-4 record against top 50 teams.
  • #25 Florida Atlantic, after sweeping UTSA this weekend, is only one game out of first place in the C-USA standings.  The Owls own a 10-4 record against teams ranked in the top 100 of the Bassford RPI, including a 5-3 record against top 50 teams.

Missing

  • UNC Wilmington fell out of the rankings (down to #34) after going 2-1 on the weekend, beating College of Charleston in a weekend series. UNCW is 1-7 against top 50 teams.
  • Southeast Missouri State fell out of the rankings (down to #59) after going 1-3 this past week, losing a series to Tennessee Tech and falling midweek to St.Louis. SEMO is 0-5 versus top 50 teams.
  • Creighton dropped down to #31 after winning two out of three games this past week. The team has not played a top 50 team and is 7-7 against teams ranked 51st-100th. They did beat Georgetown this weekend in their weekend set and the Blue Jays lead the Big East by a game and a half over Xavier who they’ll face this coming weekend.
  • Lamar plummeted to #50 this week after going 0-for-4 in games this past week and losing their fifth straight games. They are 2-4 versus top 50 teams.
  • Kent State fell to #41 this week. The Golden Flashes are 0-2 versus top 50 teams and 1-5 versus top 100 teams. They still lead the Mid-American East division by 4.5 games over Miami of Ohio.

Rising

  • #9 Southeastern Louisiana moved up eight positions after winning their seventh straight game and sweeping conference-rival Lamar. The Lions lead the Southland Conference by two games over Sam Houston State. They are 8-7 versus top 50 teams.
  • #6 Texas Tech moved up seven places this week after sweeping Kansas on the road. The series sweep gave the Red Raiders a 3.5 game lead over Oklahoma State with only three conference games remaining—which means Texas Tech has now clinched the conference regular season title.
  • #13 North Carolina rose six spots on the leaderboard this week even after losing their weekend series with #2 Louisville, two games to one. The Tarheels are 6-2 versus teams ranked 51st-100th and, of their 47 games played so far this year, 33 have been against top 100 opponents. Not surprising as the ‘Heels are part of the beefed up ACC.
  • #17 Coastal Carolina jumped up six rungs on the rankings ladder this week. The Chanticleers bested Liberty three games to none this weekend, scoring more than 12 runs in each contest. The team is 5-7 against top 50 teams and is 9-5 versus teams ranked 51st to 100th.

Falling

  • #18 Bryant went 3-1 last weekend but still fell 12 positions in the rankings thanks mostly to only playing top 100 teams eight times so far this year. Bryant has, by far, the lowest SOS in the rankings at 43%, same for their underachieving SOV at 44%.
  • #15 South Carolina dropped a series to Kentucky and fell eight spots from their #7 ranking last week. The Gamecocks are 9-10 versus top 50 teams and are still tied with Florida for the SEC East lead.

Odds and Ends

  • #18 Bryant, #13 North Carolina and #9 SE Louisiana are not ranked in any of the national listing noted below. They are only included in these rankings in the top 25 as 1) Bryant—regardless of their schedule—has single digit losses which only a handful of Division 1 teams can claim that and they are also dominating Northeast conference play; 2) UNC and SELU are coming on strong as the season comes to a close and both have strong baseball programs/history. Both are also in for the reasons listed above for UNC and SELU.
  • Oklahoma State and Washington are both included in all of the national rankings below. They are not, however, included in the Bassford rankings as 1) OSU (#33 in these rankings) is 5-8 versus top 50 teams and have a sub-.500 SOV. While their Elo Rating is high at over 1800, they have not been consistent enough to place in the top 25. 2) Washington (#27 in these rankings) has only 27 wins, but, are 4-2 versus top 50 teams and 10-6 versus 51-100 teams. The Pac-12 is unusually middle heavy this year and have only one team ranked in the top 25, Arizona. Washington simply has been unable to gain any traction in the upper echelon.
